African American Literature Set
Made to Order at Juniper Custom in Boulder, Colorado
No library of American literature is complete without the writers who saw the nation most clearly, naming its contradictions and shaping its conscience. This set gathers seven of them, spanning two centuries of autobiography, fiction and essay: Frederick Douglass, W.E.B. Du Bois, Zora Neale Hurston, Richard Wright, James Baldwin, Maya Angelou and Toni Morrison. The jackets reproduce The Library by Jacob Lawrence, a painting thought to depict the 135th Street Library in Harlem, now the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. It is an image of readers absorbed in books, and a fitting emblem for writing of such consequence.
