Few bands have inspired devotion quite like the Grateful Dead. Their music, their legend and the community that followed them from show to show remain a world unto themselves, and now a shelf of their own.

This collection gathers books on the band's music, history and legendary performances, among them the story of the celebrated 1977 Cornell concert, the unpublished interviews of Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter's account of the band's earliest days. Whether for the lifelong Deadhead with a ticket stub for every year or the music lover just discovering the band, it brings a touch of psychedelic spirit to a music room, a record-lined den or a studio.

What is the difference between the two Grateful Dead sets?
The Brown set features a classic rose motif and includes four books. The Black and White set features a skull and includes five books. Each is assembled from the titles listed above, according to availability.

Why a rose and a skull?
Together they are among the most recognizable emblems in rock history. The skull and roses first appeared on a 1966 concert poster by Alton Kelley and Stanley Mouse, adapted from an illustration for The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, and later graced the band's 1971 live album. Our two designs give each half of that iconography a set of its own.

Why is the Cornell 1977 concert so celebrated?
The band's performance at Barton Hall on May 8, 1977, circulated for decades among tape-trading Deadheads and came to be regarded by many as one of the finest shows they ever played. In 2012, the recording was added to the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry. Peter Conners's Cornell '77 tells the story of that night and the legend that grew from it.
